Earth Day Dallas 2013 Update: April 22, 2013

Earth Day Dallas 2013

a Success!

Ursuline Academy's Permaculture Awareness Club attended the Earth Day Dallas Festival this weekend on Saturday, April 20th and Sunday, April 21st at Fair Park.

I heard a little girl read this sign slowly and then turn to her mom and say
"Yes Please! We can play in the grass here, Mommy!"

At the UA Academic Booth!

Our booth featured three of our Sustainability awareness projects at
Ursuline, including education about: The LEED certified buildings on campus,
The UA Permaculture Awareness Club and thus the campus garden, and our
Environmental Science classes and projects that are done at Ursuline.

Karla, Lexie, Lindsey, Mary and Tristan at the UA Academic Booth!

Tori, our club's senior treasurer, explains answers to sustainability
questions asked by Christ the King 6th graders at UA's academic booth.

UA Permaculture club members laugh at a funny antidote by
senior Mary Francis, our club's vice president and funny-story guru.

The girls at the end of Sunday's Earth Day festival in the booth area.

Outside of the booth, Into the festival!

Now for some pictures of the girls experiencing the festival.  Part of this weekend is not only to advocate for what we are doing on campus with sustainability issues, but also for the girls to go out into the festival and experience the sustainability education of other schools and companies.

Senior Helen Peace climbs trees with a group at the
festival that climbs trees as a hobby!

Helen is having a blast!

These girls are soaking in the education piece of the festival.  Visiting colleges
included information about their new Sustainability majors and programs, including
popular colleges such as UT, A&M, Stephen F Austin, TCU, Texas Women's and more!

Senior Mary Francis and Junior Karla Paredo were awarded trees after
playing games in the festival with several different companies- prizes included
light bulbs, seeds, trees, and a variety of plants!

Above is the Home Depot center where our girls could paint pots and plant
a flower of their choice with other students.  Below shows some of our UA students'
products from this expo; they are all bringing these plants home to care for!

Ursuline freshmen, Lauren, JoHanna, Sabrina, and Katie all won a t-shirt for
talking with the local news channel; they were featured on a news cast about
the event that aired Sunday night at 5pm.

Lauren, JoHanna, Mary Francis and Sabrina stand with Mother Nature and a Tree man, spotted
walking around the festival all day with other characters such as the Recycling Bin and a Drop of Water!

Thank you to all who supported our Ursuline girls

at Earth Day Dallas! As you can see, they had a blast!

Welcome to the
Ursuline Academy Permaculture Club's
April 15th Update!

*We have a baby lemon starting to grow
on our club's lemon tree, Thomasina!

Check out the first lemon of our tree! 4-4-13

*Coming up activity of the club:

We will be hosting a booth at Earth Day Dallas on April 20th-21st from 10 am-6 pm at Fair Park.

Stop by the festival to see several academic booths presenting their efforts to educate about sustainability, several different product booths selling sustainable goods, and a variety of companies showcasing their goals of future sustainability.

I will be putting pictures up of our experience next week!

*On April 8th, the club Skyped with the Oakland-based "Back to the Roots" company:

"Back to the Roots" promotes sustainable garden products for the individual consumer, hoping to get more people growing their own food in their backyard and kitchen!

The club was able to connect with Jasmine Jackson, The Back to the Roots Community Happiness Guru.  We discussed perusing a career in sustainability related fields and learned about the lifestyle this company promotes!

Here are some pictures of our most-interesting talk with Jasmine over Skype!

Thanks Jasmine for all your great knowledge and willingness to promote sustainable living among the youth and educational systems!  We loved meeting you and look forward to working with you in the future! Thanks Back to the Roots for being so accessible as well!  Great company with a great mission!

February 7th 2013 Update

Wondering what this club is all about?

At Global Issues day on January 30th, Miss Merani had two information sessions about our club and Ursuline's sustainability community.

Here is the February Calendar for the club:

*

*Also the last week in February we will have a Monday after school meeting from 4-5: February 25th

We had a harvest of carrots!

Mary Francis and Kate

These carrots survived our crazy December/January weather in Dallas Texas.

Ana Perez- Secretary             Miss Merani- teacher mod.

Most of our winter crops froze the day after Christmas, but the club managed one large harvest before the freeze:

We were able to donate this basket to the Missionary of Charities Convent in Oak Cliff, Texas.
